Tenley Albright

Winter Sports

Tenley Albright, born Tenley Emma Albright on 18 July 1935, is an American former figure skater who also became a surgeon. She won the Olympic title in 1956 and the Olympic silver medal in 1952, and she was the World Champion in 1953 and 1955. She also took the North American championship in 1953 and 1955 and was the United States national champion in every year from 1952 to 1956. After her skating career she trained at Harvard Medical School and practised as a surgeon, a combination of elite sport and medicine that is unusual among Olympic champions. In 2015 she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame, an honour that recognises her contribution beyond the ice as well as her competitive record. Her titles place her among the leading American women skaters of the early 1950s.
