Sun Yang is a Chinese competitive swimmer, born December 1, 1991, in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, who specializes in freestyle events from 200 to 1500 meters. He became the first Chinese male athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in swimming, in 2012, and went on to win three Olympic gold medals and eleven World Championship gold medals, becoming the first male swimmer in history to earn Olympic and World Championship gold medals at every freestyle distance from 200 to 1500 meters. He broke the world record in the 1500 meter freestyle at age 19 during the 2011 World Championships, and NBC Sports described him in 2017 as very arguably the greatest freestyle swimmer of all time. His career has also been marked by controversy, including a 2014 doping suspension and an eight year ban, later reduced to four years and three months, imposed in 2020 over a disputed testing incident in 2018.
