Ray Charles Leonard, known as Sugar Ray Leonard, is an American former professional boxer, born in 1956, who won the light welterweight gold medal at the 1976 Montreal Olympics before turning professional and winning world titles in five weight divisions, from welterweight to light heavyweight, finishing with a record of 36 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw. He was part of boxing's Four Kings alongside Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and Marvin Hagler and defeated all three, including the 1980 Brawl in Montreal loss to Duran avenged in a rematch, the 1981 unification bout against Hearns known as the Showdown, and a controversial 1987 split decision win over Hagler. He was the first boxer to earn more than 100 million dollars in career purses and was named Boxer of the Decade for the 1980s.

How did Sugar Ray Leonard get the name Sugar?
An Olympic team coach called him sweet as sugar and the name stuck.
The name came from the US Olympic boxing team. Sarge Johnson, an assistant coach of the team, said to Leonard's coach Dave Jacobs that the kid he had was sweet as sugar, and the nickname stuck. Given his style and his first name, it was probably only a matter of time before people called him Sugar Ray, after Sugar Ray Robinson, the man many consider the greatest boxer of all time.
