Did Kerri Strug's injured vault at the 1996 Olympics actually decide the team gold?
No. Olympedia says the United States would still have won by 0.309 points without her final vault.
Not strictly. Strug was a vault specialist, but she landed poorly on her first attempt in the 1996 team final and injured her left ankle, then took the final vault anyway. Olympedia notes that without that last vault the United States would still have won the competition, by 0.309 points. The moment became famous as a symbol of determination rather than as the score that settled the title. The injury did cost her a place in the floor final in Atlanta, which she had qualified for in first position.
