Ellen Preis

Combat Sports

Ellen Preis, later competing as Ellen Müller-Preis, was an Austrian foil fencer born in Berlin on 6 May 1912 to a German mother and an Austrian father. At thirteen she moved to Vienna to train at her aunt's fencing school and, holding both nationalities, chose to represent Austria. She won the women's individual foil at the 1932 Summer Olympics after a fence-off with Judy Guinness, took bronze at the 1936 and 1948 Games, and competed again in 1952 and 1956, finishing seventh at the age of 44. She also won world titles in 1947, 1949 and 1950 and 17 Austrian individual foil championships between 1929 and 1957. After retiring she taught fencing to actors and worked as a professor at a Vienna music and art college. She died in Vienna in 2007.
