Why did Dan Jansen fall in both of his races at the 1988 Winter Olympics?
His sister Jane died of leukemia a few hours before his 500 metre race in 1988.
On the day of the 500 metres at the 1988 Winter Olympics, Dan Jansen was told that his sister Jane, who was sick with leukemia, was close to death, and a few hours before the race he learned that she had died. He started anyway but fell on the first turn, and a few days later he fell again in the 1,000 metres. Olympedia says he reacted to those defeats with grace. He later won the 1,000 metres at the 1994 Winter Olympics in world record time.
