Barend "Ben" Bril was a Dutch flyweight boxer born in Amsterdam on 16 July 1912. He became Dutch amateur champion at fifteen and just met the age requirement to box for the Netherlands at the 1928 Summer Olympics, where he finished in a shared fifth place. He went on to win eight more Dutch titles and the 1935 Maccabiah Games. Finances kept him from the 1932 Games, and as a Jew he refused to compete in Nazi Germany in 1936. He and his family were deported to Bergen-Belsen during the Second World War, and he survived. He later became a boxing referee and judge and officiated at several Olympic Games, including the 1964 Tokyo boxing tournament. He died in Amsterdam in 2003 at the age of 91.
