FAQs

Why did Vladimir Salnikov not win an Olympic medal in 1984?

The Soviet boycott of the 1984 Games kept him out; he came back to win the 1988 Olympic 1500 meter freestyle.

Olympedia says the Soviet boycott of the 1984 Games denied him the opportunity of further Olympic honors that year. He then returned from near retirement and won the 1,500 meter freestyle at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, when nobody considered him a favorite for any medal.
