Vasili Sergeyevich Oshchepkov (7 January 1893 to 10 October 1937) was a Russian and Soviet researcher of national wrestling styles and martial arts. He was ranked a Merited Master of Sports of the USSR and an Honored Coach of the USSR, and is counted among the founders of sambo, the martial art developed in the Soviet Union. During the Great Purge he was arrested in 1937 and accused of being a Japanese spy, and he was executed in prison that year.
