What happened to Valeri Kharlamov in the 1972 Summit Series?
A slash from Bobby Clarke in the sixth game fractured his ankle and reduced his effect on the rest of the series.
Kharlamov began the series as a star. In the first game he scored two goals on Ken Dryden and was named the game's most valuable player. In the sixth game Bobby Clarke slashed him and fractured a bone in his ankle. He missed the seventh game and returned for the eighth and final game at much reduced effectiveness. Many in Canada felt the slash was intentional, and his injury and diminished play afterward have been regarded as a turning point in Canada's favour, as Canada won the series in the final game.
