Football Codes

Frederick Charles Keenor, known as Fred Keenor, was a Welsh professional footballer, born in Cardiff on 31 July 1894 and died on 19 October 1972. A hard tackling defender, he spent 19 years at his hometown club Cardiff City, making more than 500 appearances, and served in the Football Battalion during the First World War, where he suffered a severe shrapnel wound at the Somme in 1916. He helped Cardiff reach the 1925 FA Cup Final, which they lost to Sheffield United, and as club captain led them to victory over Arsenal in the 1927 FA Cup Final, the only time the cup has been won by a team based outside England. He also won four Welsh Cup titles and the FA Charity Shield, and won 32 caps for Wales, helping the side win the British Home Championship in 1920, 1924 and 1928. A statue of him lifting the FA Cup stands outside the Cardiff City Stadium.
