Michal Martikan is a Slovak canoe slalom paddler born May 18, 1979, in Liptovsky Mikulas, who at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics became the first athlete to win an Olympic gold medal for Slovakia after the country's 1993 independence. Across five consecutive Olympic Games from 1996 to 2012 he won five Olympic medals in the C1 event, two gold, two silver and one bronze, the most of any slalom paddler in history, and he added twenty three World Championship medals, fifteen of them gold, plus five overall World Cup titles.
