Ian Ferguson is a New Zealand canoe sprint racer described as New Zealand's second most successful Olympian. He won four Olympic gold medals, three at the 1984 Los Angeles Games in the K-1 500m, K-2 500m and K-4 1000m events, and a fourth in the K-2 500m at the 1988 Seoul Games, plus two canoe sprint world championship titles in 1985 and 1987. He was the first New Zealander to compete in five Olympic Games, from 1976 to 1992, and was named New Zealand Sportsman of the Year in 1984.
