He sailed the Finn class at three Summer Olympic Games, in 1968, 1972 and 1976. He later led the Belgian Olympic Committee from 1989 to 1992 and the European Olympic Committees from 1989 to 2001, joined the International Olympic Committee in 1991 and its executive board in 1998, was knighted in 1992 and made a count in the Belgian nobility in 2002. His athletic career is recorded here separately from his administrative one.
