Gaelic football is a football code from Ireland played between two teams of fifteen players on a rectangular pitch, who score by kicking or hand-passing a round ball over a crossbar or into a netted goal, combining elements of soccer and rugby with a distinctive solo-run carrying technique. It was codified under the Gaelic Athletic Association, founded in 1884 to preserve traditional Irish sports. The sport remains organized on a strictly amateur basis and is most prominent in Ireland, with its All-Ireland Football Championship as its premier competition.
