Netball is a court-based team sport, derived from early forms of basketball, in which two teams of seven players score by passing a ball down the court and shooting it through a raised, netted hoop, with strict rules against running with the ball or contact between players. It developed in England in the 1890s and is especially popular in Commonwealth nations including Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica and several African and Pacific countries. The sport is governed internationally by World Netball and, while not part of the Olympic program, features prominently at the Commonwealth Games.
