Petra Schneider

Aquatic Sports

Petra Schneider is a retired German competitive swimmer, born January 11, 1963, in Karl-Marx-Stadt, East Germany, who specialized in medley and freestyle events during the 1970s and 1980s. She won an Olympic gold medal in the 400 meter individual medley at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, set five world records, and was named Swimming World's World Swimmer of the Year in both 1980 and 1982. She was part of East Germany's state run doping program and later admitted to having been administered steroids; in 2005 she called for her remaining German national record to be struck from the record books because it had been achieved with the aid of steroids, and Swimming World magazine subsequently vacated her awards.
