Three Decades Without a Federation: The Early World Othello Championship

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

The World Othello Championship began in Tokyo in 1977 with five competing countries and ran every year afterward, building a genuine competitive history, a growing international entry list and a settled set of rules years before the World Othello Federation existed to formally govern any of it. For nearly three decades the tournament's own organizing committee, working with the game's trademark holders and national Othello associations as they formed one by one, carried the administrative weight that a permanent federation would eventually take over.

That unusually long gap between a championship track record and a governing federation meant the WOF, when it finally formed in 2005, was not building trust in the tournament from scratch. It was formalizing an event whose legitimacy twenty two founding national federations had already recognized through nearly thirty years of showing up and competing.
