A Trophy With No Calendar

The Rugby World Cup and the UEFA European Championship both run on a fixed calendar cycle. The America's Cup runs whenever a challenge is issued and accepted, and not one day before. The competition operates under the Deed of Gift, the document that vests trusteeship of the Cup in whichever yacht club currently holds it, the defender, and a race happens only when that club accepts a challenge, not on any fixed schedule the way the other two tournaments do. Matches are contested one on one, a single defender against a single challenger, rather than a bracket of entrants working through a field the way a World Cup or a Euros does. The current holder, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, took the Cup in 2024 when its team, Emirates Team New Zealand, beat Britain's INEOS Britannia seven races to two in Barcelona, and the calendar for whenever it is defended next is, as it always has been, entirely up to whoever holds the trophy and whoever challenges for it.
