Verena Vreni Schneider is a retired Swiss alpine ski racer born November 26, 1964, in Elm, Glarus, considered the most successful alpine ski racer in Swiss history and honored as Swiss Sportswoman of the Century. She won 55 World Cup races over her career, fourth all time among women, along with three overall World Cup titles and eleven discipline titles, and took five Olympic medals including three golds, in the slalom and giant slalom at the 1988 Calgary Games and the slalom at the 1994 Lillehammer Games. She also won three World Championship gold medals, in the giant slalom at Crans-Montana in 1987 and Vail in 1989 and the slalom at Saalbach in 1991, and during the 1988-89 season she won 14 World Cup races, a single season record that stood until Mikaela Shiffrin broke it in 2018-19; she retired in 1995 after eleven seasons.
