Franz Klammer is an Austrian former alpine ski racer, born December 3, 1953. He won the downhill gold medal at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck in front of a home crowd, starting fifteenth and falling behind the pace before charging back over the final third of the course to win by just over a third of a second. He dominated World Cup downhill racing for four consecutive seasons from 1975 to 1978 and won the discipline title again in 1983, and was named Austrian sportsman of the year in 1981.
