Truco

Truco is a trick-taking card game that originated in Valencia and the Balearic Islands in Spain and has since become especially popular throughout South America as well as in Italy. It can be played by two individual players or by two teams of two or three players each, giving it flexibility for both intimate and larger social settings. The game is traditionally played with a forty-card Spanish-suited deck, though some Brazilian variants substitute a French-suited deck instead, and it centers on a distinctive bluffing and bidding dynamic in which players can escalate the stakes of a hand by calling out the word truco itself, daring opponents to raise further or concede the round. This blend of trick-taking mechanics with open verbal bluffing has made truco a deeply social card game in the countries where it is played, often accompanied by informal signaling conventions between teammates that add another layer of strategy beyond the cards themselves.
