Karnöffel is a trick-taking card game that probably originated in the upper German speaking area of Europe in the first quarter of the fifteenth century, making it the oldest identifiable European card game with a continuous tradition of play down to the present day. It first appears in the historical record in a 1426 municipal ordinance of Noerdlingen in Bavaria, which listed it among the games that could be lawfully played at the town's annual fete, showing that it was already an established pastime by that date. The game was traditionally played by four players in two teams of two, with partners seated opposite one another, and is notable for an unusual ranking of cards in which certain low value cards, led by the Karnoffel card itself, outrank normally superior cards under specific conditions, producing trick taking dynamics quite different from later standard trick taking games. Regional variants of the game and its distinctive ranking system spread across German speaking Europe and survive today in isolated pockets, preserving mechanics that predate the standardized suits and rankings familiar from most modern card games.
