Frog (American card game)

Frog, sometimes called solo sixty, is a trick taking card game for three players that was popular in the southern United States and in Mexico, where it is known as rana. It belongs to the German Tarok family of games, whose members grew out of attempts to adapt tarot style card play to a standard non tarot deck. Frog is played with a 36 card French pack ranked ace, ten, king, queen, jack, nine, eight, seven, six from high to low, dealt among three active players out of the three to five who may take part in a session. Players bid for the right to name the game's contract, choosing among Frog, a pick up contract; Chico, a simple solo contract; and Grand, a harder heart solo contract, each changing how many cards the soloist may exchange with the widow and how play proceeds. The game is closely related to German Tarok, Bavarian Tarock, Six Bid and Tapp, all descendants of the same trick taking card family, and play proceeds clockwise around the table.
