Powerlifting

Gymnastics and Strength Sports

Powerlifting is a strength sport in which competitors attempt a maximum single lift across three fixed disciplines, the squat, the bench press and the deadlift, with the highest combined total across the three determining the winner in each weight class. The sport developed from odd-lift and strongman traditions in the United States and United Kingdom during the mid-20th century, splitting off from Olympic weightlifting's more technical clean-and-jerk and snatch lifts. It is governed internationally by the International Powerlifting Federation and, while not part of the Olympic program, is contested at dedicated World Championships and the World Games.
