Origin year places a sport in the year its own laws were first fixed. Wikipedia notes association football "is played in accordance with the Laws of the Game, a set of rules that has been in effect since 1863." Browsing by origin year shows how long a sport's modern rulebook has actually existed.

FAQs
Why are basketball, handball and volleyball grouped separately from Football Codes?
Basketball, handball and volleyball are court-based sports scored without a bat or stick, distinct from the open-field goal-line sports of Football Codes.
Court and Net Team Sports covers team sports played on a marked court and scored by putting a ball through a hoop, over a net, or into a goal without a bat or stick, such as basketball, handball and volleyball. They are kept separate from Football Codes, which covers goal-line team sports played on an open field, because the scoring shape and playing surface differ.
