Olympic programme status records whether a sport is actually part of the Olympic Games. Wikipedia notes the men's football World Cup is "the most-viewed sporting event in the world, surpassing the Olympic Games," a comparison that only makes sense because football itself is contested at the Olympics too. This dimension separates sports on the Olympic programme from those that have never been included.

FAQs
Why are basketball, handball and volleyball grouped separately from Football Codes?
Basketball, handball and volleyball are court-based sports scored without a bat or stick, distinct from the open-field goal-line sports of Football Codes.
Court and Net Team Sports covers team sports played on a marked court and scored by putting a ball through a hoop, over a net, or into a goal without a bat or stick, such as basketball, handball and volleyball. They are kept separate from Football Codes, which covers goal-line team sports played on an open field, because the scoring shape and playing surface differ.
