Tabletop and related role-playing games, in which players take on the roles of characters in a shared fiction guided by a rules system and, in most designs, a referee or game master, covering Dungeons & Dragons and its descendants, Pathfinder, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, Rolemaster, Cyberpunk, Deadlands, Eclipse Phase, Fate and Cortex as rules systems, Dungeon World and other story-focused designs, and licensed franchise games such as A Song of Ice and Fire Roleplaying and Serenity. A system or setting book that is played as a role-playing game belongs here whether it is a full game, a rules engine reused by many settings, or a short single-session design. Belongs here: games whose central activity is playing a character within a persistent fiction under shared rules. Does not belong here: tabletop miniatures and board games that borrow a fantasy theme without character role-play, such as Warhammer 40,000 and Descent, which stay under Modern Conquest and War Games or Modern Hobby Strategy Games, and video game role-playing games, which are not part of this tree's physical and tabletop scope.
