Origin YearHaskett Smith's June 1886 ascent of Napes Needle in the English Lake District is thought by some to mark the origins of rock climbing as a sport in its own right, but the source frames this for England only and other accounts date mountaineering and rock ascents earlier, so 1886 is one accepted answer and not a settled worldwide founding year.
