Mario Andretti is an American racing driver born February 28, 1940, in Montona in what was then Italy and is now Motovun, Croatia, who won the Formula One World Drivers Championship in 1978 driving for Lotus, becoming only the second American to hold the title. He also won the 1969 Indianapolis 500, the 1967 Daytona 500, four IndyCar national championships in 1965, 1966, 1969 and 1984, and three runnings of the 12 Hours of Sebring, amassing 111 official race victories across Formula One, IndyCar and stock car racing and winning races in four different decades, a versatility across disciplines matched by almost no other driver in motorsport history.
