Great Galactic Conflict

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

The Great Galactic Conflict, often shortened to GGC, was a turn-based massively multiplayer online game available in Australia around 1985. Players reached it through Viatel, the text-based dial-up service from Telecom Australia. Each player entered moves during a one-week period, and once a week the game engine processed them and computed the result that became the basis for the next week's moves. A whole game took ten weeks, and negotiation between players formed a large part of play. Ian Davies wrote it for Microtex 666 between 1983 and 1984, and it was built to support 1,000 players but peaked at around 600.
