Avalon is a text-based online multiplayer fantasy role-playing game world, a MUD, developed and published by Yehuda Simmons and first opened to players on October 28 1989 at the Adventure 89 gaming convention. Daniel James joined as a designer around May 1990. The game ran on Acorn Archimedes computers before moving to Intel Pentium PCs running Linux. Character files show continuous, unbroken continuity from October 1989 through 2015 and beyond, making it one of the longest continuously running online role-playing games in history, though regular outages began in 2023.
