Fresco (board game)

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Fresco is a 2010 designer board game by Marco Ruskowski and Marcel Sussellbeck, published by Queen Games for two to four players. Players take the roles of master painters hired to restore the ceiling fresco of a cathedral before an approaching festival. Each morning, players choose how early to wake their apprentices: waking earlier gives first pick of the paint stalls in the town market but costs the workers more in wages, while waking later saves money but leaves fewer good colors on offer. Over the course of the game players buy pigments, mix them into the specific colors the fresco needs, restore sections of the painting for points, and juggle secondary concerns such as apprentice morale and the bishop's approval. The game was nominated for the 2010 Spiel des Jahres and went on to win that year's Deutscher Spiele Preis, a peer prize voted on by German hobby gamers and retailers.
