Dominant Species (board game)

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Dominant Species is a 2010 competitive area control board game published by GMT Games and designed by Chad Jensen. Players each take on a broad category of animal life, such as mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, arachnids or insects, competing to spread their species across a world heading into an Ice Age. The map is built from hexagonal tiles representing seven terrain types: mountain, desert, forest, jungle, savannah, wetland and sea. A central mechanic uses six elements, grass, grub, meat, seed, sun and water, that appear both as supply on tiles and as requirements on player boards. The game uses worker placement through action pawns, with each round made up of Planning, Execution and Reset phases, and it supports two to six players in a playing time of roughly two to four hours. Play ends when the Ice Age dominance card is drawn, with victory going to the player who has scored the most points.
