Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Descent: Journeys in the Dark is a high-fantasy dungeon-crawl board game for two to five players, designed by Kevin Wilson and published by Fantasy Flight Games in 2005, building on an improved version of the mechanics from the company's earlier licensed title Doom: The Boardgame. One player takes the role of the Overlord, controlling the dungeon's monsters and traps and spending threat points on cards to hinder the others, while the remaining players act as a party of adventurers exploring underground complexes, fighting enemies, and gathering treasure toward victory conditions tied to specific quests. A typical session runs from about two to four hours after a setup of under thirty minutes, with designers Jesper Ejsing, John Goodenough, and Frank Walls credited on the original release.
