Wingspan is a medium-weight, card-driven engine-building board game designed by Elizabeth Hargrave and published by Stonemaier Games in 2019. Players compete to attract birds to a network of wildlife preserves, using 170 individually illustrated bird cards whose in-game powers reflect real behaviors of the actual species, drawn from data supplied by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the IUCN Red List and the National Audubon Society. Hargrave conceived the game after visiting Lake Artemesia near her Maryland home and keeping her own charts of the birds she observed there. The base game supports one to five players in roughly forty to seventy minutes, with a later expansion extending it to seven players. Wingspan won the 2019 Kennerspiel des Jahres, one of the board game hobby's most prominent annual awards, and has sold more than 2.6 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling hobby board games of its era.
