Root (board game)

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right is a 2018 asymmetric strategy wargame board game designed by Cole Wehrle, illustrated by Kyle Ferrin, and published by Leder Games. The game is intended for two to four players and typically runs sixty to ninety minutes, with a recommended age of ten and up. Players take control of rival woodland factions competing for control of a forest territory, and the game's defining feature is its asymmetry: each faction operates under substantially different rules, resources and victory conditions rather than sharing a single common rule set with only minor differences, so a militaristic faction plays nothing like a guerrilla-focused faction seeking to undermine the established order. This asymmetric design has been widely praised within the modern hobby board game community for making replays feel genuinely different depending on which faction a player controls, and Root has become a touchstone example of asymmetric strategy game design since its release.
