Puerto Rico is a Euro-style strategy board game designed by German game designer Andreas Seyfarth and first published in German in 2002 by Alea, for three to five players, with an official variant supporting two. Players take on the roles of colonial governors developing plantations and buildings on the island of Puerto Rico during its Caribbean colonial period, growing and processing crops such as corn, sugar, coffee and tobacco and shipping the finished goods to earn victory points, while also constructing buildings that grant ongoing production or scoring bonuses. Turn order in Puerto Rico is set by a rotating selection of roles, such as the trader, mayor, builder or captain, each of which grants a special benefit to the player who chooses it and a lesser action to everyone else. The game became one of the most influential titles in modern board gaming, holding the top overall ranking on BoardGameGeek for more than five years before being overtaken by Agricola.
