7th Sea (role-playing game)

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

7th Sea is a swashbuckling-and-sorcery tabletop role-playing game designed by John Wick and set in Theah, a fantasy analogue of 17th-century Europe. It was first published by Alderac Entertainment Group in 1999 and won the Origins Award for Best Roleplaying Game in 2000. The original system used a d10 roll-and-keep dice mechanic; in 2004 the line was recast as Swashbuckling Adventures using the d20 System before later returning to its own identity. After a period of publication difficulties, John Wick regained the rights in 2015 and funded a new second edition through a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2016, which went on to win six ENNIE Awards in 2017, including Product of the Year and Best Rules. Chaosium acquired full publishing rights to 7th Sea in 2019 and has continued active development of the line since, with players taking on swashbuckling heroes who duel, sail and intrigue their way across Theah's rival nations.
