Middle-earth Role Playing, known as MERP, is a tabletop role-playing game first published in 1984 by Iron Crown Enterprises under license from Tolkien Enterprises. It lets players adventure in the world of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, using a streamlined version of Iron Crown's Rolemaster system. The game went through a first edition in 1984, a second edition in 1986, and a collectors second edition in 1993, and it was supported by a long run of setting sourcebooks covering the geography and history of Middle-earth. MERP let a referee run adventures set centuries before or after the events of Tolkien's novels, giving fans of the books a way to explore the wider setting through original characters rather than the published storyline.
