Squander

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Squander, written as $QUANDER on its box and in its rules, is a board game published by Avalon Hill in 1965. It is loosely based on Monopoly but reverses that game's central goal: as in Monopoly, players roll dice, move around a board and encounter opportunities to make financial decisions, but in Squander the object is to lose money rather than to gain it. Each player begins with one million Squanderbucks, and the winner is the first player to become completely bankrupt, requiring careful strategic choices about which bad investments and wasteful purchases to make along the way. The game carries a medium level of chance from its dice rolls, balanced against genuine strategic thought about how fastest to squander an initial fortune, making it a deliberate inversion of the traditional wealth-accumulation board game formula that Monopoly established.
