Gloom is a tabletop storytelling card game designed by Keith Baker and published by Atlas Games in 2004, built around a darkly comic premise: players guide an eccentric family through as much misfortune and misery as possible before mercifully killing them off, since a character's final score depends on having suffered the most before their death. Players lay clear plastic cards printed with illustrations and point values over character cards, stacking negative-point misfortune cards atop their own family members while trying to bring good fortune, and thus positive points, to their opponents' characters instead. The game rewards creative, spoken storytelling as players narrate each card's darkly humorous event, and its inventive transparent-card mechanic and comedic tone earned it the 2005 Origins Award for Best Traditional Card Game, followed by four expansions: Unhappy Homes, Unwelcome Guests, Unquiet Dead, and Unfortunate Expeditions.
