Food Chain Magnate is a strategy board game designed by Jeroen Doumen and Joris Wiersinga and published by the Dutch company Splotter Spellen in 2015, in which two to five players compete to build the most profitable fast food restaurant chain in a shared town. Players hire employees onto an organizational chart, unlock new job roles and menu items, place and advertise restaurants, and manage supply chains for ingredients, with almost every action requiring an employee whose salary must then be paid every following round regardless of whether that employee is used again, creating an economy where mismanaged hiring can bankrupt a player over time. The game has very little random chance once the initial setup is complete, making outcomes depend almost entirely on planning and competitive positioning against the other restaurant chains. Reviewers including IGN and CNET have highlighted its depth and satirical portrayal of competitive capitalism, with CNET naming it the best complex strategy game of 2022. An expansion, Food Chain Magnate: The Ketchup Mechanism and Other Ideas, was released in 2019.
