Wizard (board game)

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Wizard is a board game system of medieval fantasy magical combat published by Metagaming Concepts in 1978, designed by Steve Jackson as a companion to the earlier Melee, a system of hand to hand combat rules. Together the two games formed the foundation of what later became The Fantasy Trip, a tactical system built around hexagonal battle maps and individually statted characters. Wizard added spellcasting rules, letting players control mages who could hurl fireballs, summon creatures and cast defensive magic against Melee's fighters, all resolved on the same hex grid. The game stayed in print through Metagaming's original run from 1977 to 1983, then went out of production for decades before Steve Jackson Games acquired the rights and republished Wizard in 2019 alongside a revived Melee and The Fantasy Trip line, introducing the tactical magical combat system to a new generation of players.
