Aria: Canticle of the Monomyth

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Aria: Canticle of the Monomyth, also known as Aria Roleplaying, is a role-playing game published by Last Unicorn Games in 1994, designed by Christian Scott Moore and Owen M. Seyler. Rather than focusing on individual characters exploring a single established fictional world, Aria centers on the concept of the monomyth, the theory that one fundamental narrative pattern underlies most myths and legends, and asks players to build entire player nations using regional units called Narrative Environments and developmental phases called Interactive Histories. The rulebook, a 500-page softcover volume, is divided into two parts, the Persona Creation Book and the Myth Creation Book. The system uses ten-sided dice for task resolution and includes a distinctive magic system in which players invent their own spells rather than choosing from a fixed list of predetermined options.
