Silver Age Sentinels

Silver Age Sentinels is a superhero tabletop role playing game published in 2002 by Guardians of Order, the same studio behind the anime inspired Big Eyes, Small Mouth system, and designed by Stephen Kenson, Mark C. MacKinnon, Jeff Mackintosh and Jesse Scoble with development by Lucien Soulban. The game is built around the Empire City Universe, an alternate version of New York City with its own decades of invented superhero history, and it draws visually and tonally on the four color comic book tradition of Marvel and DC while updating the values and politics its heroes and villains embody for a contemporary audience. At launch Guardians of Order offered two separate rules options for the same setting: the original release used a variant of the company's own Tri-Stat system, later renamed Tri-Stat dX, which resolves actions with ten sided dice, while a companion edition compatible with the d20 System let groups already familiar with that ruleset use it instead. Offering both systems side by side for one shared setting was an unusual choice for a licensed or original superhero RPG of that period, and it let the publisher reach players loyal to either rules family without forcing one mechanical approach on everyone.
