Sanctuary (board game)

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Sanctuary is a 1982 board game designed by Bill Fawcett and published by Mayfair Games with cover art by Walter Velez, set in the fictional city of Sanctuary from the Thieves' World shared universe anthology series. Built for one to six players, the game casts participants as thieves moving through the city's districts, responding to rumors and gathering goods while avoiding the city guard. The core objective is to accumulate three hundred silver pieces and hide them safely in a secret cache before any rival does the same. A six player variant lets one participant instead control the ruling prince Kadakithis and his Hell Hounds security force, actively working to catch the other players in the act, while a solo variant casts the lone player as the governor enforcing the city's laws. Optional advanced rules add further texture, including the ability to hire thugs or scout a target before attempting a heist. Physical components include a four panel board depicting the city, plastic tokens, cardboard coins, two decks of cards and a mix of six sided and ten sided dice, packaged with a rulebook that opens with a short narrative introduction to the setting.
