Outdoor Survival

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Outdoor Survival is a board game designed by Jim Dunnigan and published by the American game company Avalon Hill in 1972. It is intended for one to four players, depending on which of its several included scenarios is being played. The game simulates the challenge of surviving in the wilderness, using a three-part hexagonal grid map that represents an area of about thirteen thousand two hundred square miles of varied natural terrain such as forest, mountain, swamp and desert. Each player controls a character who must manage a personal health level by finding sources of food and water while moving across the map, with different terrain types costing different amounts of movement. Movement itself is partly governed by die rolls, which can force a player's direction of travel, offer a limited choice of directions, or in some results leave the player completely free to choose where to move. Outdoor Survival was notable in the hobby games industry for its terrain and movement systems, which were later reused as the base map for other Avalon Hill wargames.
