Mage Knight

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Mage Knight Board Game is a single-player or cooperative fantasy exploration board game designed by Vlaada Chvatil and published by WizKids in 2011, in which each player controls a powerful hero exploring a modular hex-tile map, gaining experience, spells, artifacts and units while fighting monsters and conquering cities represented by other decks and tiles. The game is built around a hand-management deck of action cards representing the hero's basic abilities, which are gradually replaced and augmented by more powerful cards earned through play, so a player's deck becomes a personal record of the character's growth over a campaign that can span a single day-and-night cycle or a connected series of scenarios. Mage Knight Board Game reused its name and general fantasy setting from an earlier, unrelated Mage Knight collectible miniatures game published years before by a different design team, though the two share no rules or components, and it was widely reviewed as one of the more demanding and rules-dense entries in the modern hobby board game category upon release.
