Living Greyhawk

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Living Greyhawk was a massively shared Dungeons and Dragons campaign administered by the RPGA, the Role Playing Game Association, from 2000 to 2008, drawing on Gary Gygax's World of Greyhawk setting. It expanded on the format pioneered by the earlier Living City campaign by operating at a continental scale, dividing the setting into roughly thirty in-game regions, many tied to real-world countries and organizations that ran events locally, rather than centering play on a single city. Tens of thousands of players around the world took part over the campaign's lifetime, working through more than a thousand published adventures using Dungeons and Dragons Third Edition rules, later updated to the 3.5 revision. Characters and their consequences carried between tables and conventions run by different organizers, a structure meant to give a shared, persistent world feel to organized play. When Dungeons and Dragons fourth edition was announced in 2007, the RPGA opted not to convert the campaign to the new rules and instead brought Living Greyhawk to a close on December 31, 2008.
